We Have Just Begun In-Person

Documentary Screening and Filmmaker Q&A

Join us for community screenings exploring the hidden history of the Elaine Massacre of 1919

with filmmakers Michael Warren Wilson, Tongo Eisen-Martin, 2025 Windham Campbell Winner & Joshua Asante

We Have Just Begun Documentary Screening – We Have Just Begun is a powerful documentary that uncovers the long-suppressed history of the Elaine Massacre of 1919, one of the largest racial and labor massacres in U.S. history. Set in Phillips County, Arkansas, the film challenges the official narrative that has endured for over a century by centering the voices of descendants, eyewitness accounts, scholars, activists, and current residents of Elaine.

Through a seven-year collaborative investigation, the film brings to light the organized resistance of Black sharecroppers and laborers and the violent response they faced. Co-written and narrated by San Francisco Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin, and featuring readings from Ida B. Wells’s The Arkansas Riot by her great-granddaughter Michelle Duster, We Have Just Begun offers a lyrical and deeply moving portrait of a community grappling with memory, justice, and historical truth.
