America 250 for Kids and Families: Black Inventors Who Made the Stuff Around Us In-Person

Scientist Ainissa Ramirez will share inventions that we use everyday that were created by Black inventors—from the light bulb to the mailbox to ice cream.  This STEM event will highlight women trailblazers too, such as Sarah Boone, a New Haven inventor who created an early ironing board to the mathematician Gladys West, who helped to create GPS.

Ainissa Ramirez is a science evangelist.  She received her doctorate in materials science and engineering from Stanford and began her career as a scientist at Bell Labs. She then joined the faculty at Yale. Now, she focuses her energies on making science understandable to kids of all ages. Her latest children’s book, Spark, is about the African American inventor behind the microphone.  Ainissa Ramirez lives in New Haven, CT.
