Born in Chicago in 1946 and raised in Los Angeles, Allan Appel is the author of fourteen books, including eight novels, a biography, two collections of poetry, a book on botany, and A Portable Apocalypse, a handy anthology of erudite and humorous quotations about the end of the world. His new book of poems, Be Wary of the Elderly, is about aardvarks, encyclopedias, losing friends, playing hidden pictures with grandchildren, and designed for anyone who is getting older, anywhere, any time. He lives in New Haven and for the past two decades he has been a staff writer for The New Haven Independent.
